Tragically, this was the second transfusion-related death in the area, after a patient in the emergency room of a different hospital died in November of 2018. An investigation into the death revealed that a labeling error was to blame for the patient being given a blood transfusion with the wrong blood type.

While MD Anderson has taken swift action in forming a correction plan, it remains that state regulators noted deficiencies in care. These included shortcomings in nursing services, pathology services, patient information and consent rights and oversight responsibility.
